When Yanek was in the ghetto he was ten years old and was living in a pigeon coop. Yanek's parents were taken away and killed. Later in the book Yanek finds his Uncle Moshe in a concentration camp. Moshe one day was asked how much work he has done and the leader didn't like his response so he shot him.

When Yanek was liberated he said all he could here for most of the night was gun shots and bombings from the allies. When Yanek got his little sleep he woke up to no officers and no role call but to the tanks from the Americans rolling in. Yanek was given his own bed in a house and all of the people got to have a big feast.

After Yanek was liberated he then moved to America where he found a job and changed his name to Jack. When his friends moved to America he fell in love with one of the daughters and married her a couple months later. Jack died in April 2017 after sharing his life to people for many years with his wife.
